Sophora japonica, Japanese pagoda tree
A great tree for summer shade bearing yellowish, pea shaped flowers that can tolerate wet sites better than most deciduous trees. This tree is conical in shape when young then domed later.
Advantages:
- Does well in poorer sands and deep soils
- withstands drought well and roots penetrate aggressively into the soil
- tolerates rainfall down to about 550mm
- new leaves show good lime, green colour in spring
- leaf shape are rounded and clustered on pinnate compound leaflets
- good to excellent yellow, autumn colour

- this legume bears pods with seeds enclosed
