Quercus dentata, Daimyo oak

If you want an oak with the biggest, green leaf possible, this is the tree for you!

Daimyo oak is from Japan and East Asia and makes a good specimen in a smaller garden than most oaks.

Features include:

  • upright tree to about 15m
  • the crown is often loose and sparse
  • leaves crowd around top buds and grow up to 30cm long; semi-persistent
  • leaf undersides pubescent, upsides glossy green
  • bark thick, corky, strongly furrowed, dark brown
  • frost hardy and likes acid soils
  • excellent autumn colours for an oak
  • slow growing
