Quercus coccinea, Scarlet oak

This North American red oak is renowned for its scarlet, red autumn colours. The tree is also good for:

  • Smaller gardens as this tree grows to only around 15m and is upright in shape
  • the deciduous leaves are deeply lobed almost to the midrib up to 20cm long
  • leaf colour is glossy green, and the brown leaves are retained into winter
  • slender and slightly drooping branches
  • moderate to slow growth
  • shade is moderate to deep
  • acorns are small falling every second year
  • the bark is smooth and silver-grey
  • for parks and gardens
  • tolerates poor sandy soils, but not shade
