Aesculus indica, Indian horse chestnut

A compact, small tree in lowland areas like Melbourne although it will grow taller in cooler, montane areas of the tablelands.

Uses and features:

  • a medium to small feature tree to 12m suitable for larger city gardens, street trees, parks and farms
  • very ornamental, with flowers white and upright that are most impressive
  • upright in form, spreading more with age
  • leaves palmate and very long
  • excellent autumn colours
  • medium growth

Horse chestnuts grow best in free draining, deep soils. Has large brown nuts.
